What is an Internship?

An internship is essentially a way to help a student transition from study to work. It is an incredibly powerful way for students and graduates to apply their learning and gain an understanding of what is needed in the working world.

Internships allow students and graduates to further develop their skills and provide valuable experience that will assist in gaining meaningful employment in their field of study.
If you are new to Australia and are looking for a job, an internship can provide you with local, relevant experience that can help you differentiate yourself from other applicants.

Why should you do an internship?

It will significantly increase your chances of getting a job!

An internship:

  • Allows you to apply what you studied in university to a real workplace
  • Develops your communication skills and confidence
  • Gives you the chance to learn how a business works and provides access to hard-to-find opportunities
  • Gives you an opportunity to try the career you want
  • Builds your professional business networks
  • Provides the opportunity to gain references and endorsements
Is the internship guaranteed?

Yes!

We will work with you to find a suitable internship that contains elements of what you’re looking to do or the skills you’re expecting to develop.

What is the duration of an internship?

Our internship programs can span from as little as 5 weeks to 6 months depending on the kind of program requirements of any particular intern. Interns can also work which can be anywhere from 3 to 5 days per week.

Who can do an internship?

Anyone!

Just make sure it’s through a university or registered organisation like Outcome Academy.

What type of internships do you offer?

We think that there are two primary types of internships that are meaningful:

  • A 12-week individual Internship that usually requires 20 hours per week part-time if offered during a university semester. These internships can be full-time if offered during the holiday breaks.

  • A 12-week group internship in a group that usually requires between 10-20 hours per week part-time.

Both programs are offered either on-site or remotely – where you are located at home (anywhere in the world) working for a company.

Will I get paid?

Internships can either be paid or unpaid.

Paid internships typically provide the intern with a salary or stipend for their work, while unpaid internships do not provide any form of compensation.

Depending on your company’s geographical location, employers and internship programs are legally required to pay interns at least minimum wage. Some also offer a compensation package including benefits like health insurance, vacation days, etc.

The laws regarding unpaid internships vary by country and by state, with some jurisdictions having stricter requirements for when an internship must be paid. In the United States, for example, an intern must be paid at least minimum wage if the internship is for the benefit of the employer and the intern is not receiving academic credit for the internship.

When you engage in our program, we will help you understand whether your internship will be a paid opportunity.

Will I get a job at the end of my internship?

Many companies choose to hire interns after their internship period has ended. Your host company has had the opportunity to evaluate your skills, work ethic and fit within the company.

Make the most of your opportunity!

But, it is important to note that while internships are designed to provide students or recent graduates with work experience, they are not a guarantee of employment. Employers should always follow their standard hiring procedures and should not make any promises of employment during the internship period.

Typical responsibilities for interns include:

  • Assisting in research and data analysis
  • Contributing to marketing and advertising initiatives
  • Engaging in project design and development
  • Providing support for day-to-day company operations
  • Shadowing and learning from seasoned professionals

Does the internship have to be a paid or unpaid opportunity?

It is completely up to you – but we are here to guide you through the process.

Paid internships typically provide the intern with a salary or stipend for their work, while unpaid internships do not provide any form of compensation.

Depending on your company's geographical location, employers and internship programs are legally required to pay interns at least minimum wage. Some also offer a compensation package including benefits like health insurance, vacation days, etc.

In the United States, for example, an intern must be paid at least minimum wage if the internship is for the benefit of the employer and the intern is not receiving academic credit for the internship.

Can I choose to hire my intern?

Yes!

Many companies hire interns after their internship period has ended. They have had the opportunity to evaluate the intern’s skills, work ethic and fit within the company. Hiring an intern who has already been trained and familiarised with the company’s operations can save the company time and resources in the recruitment process.

Note that while internships are designed to provide students or recent graduates with work experience, they are not a guarantee of employment. Employers should always follow their standard hiring procedures and should not make any promises of employment during the internship period.

Keep in mind any legal requirements and regulations regarding the hiring process and the intern’s status. Some countries have laws that govern internships and the rights of interns, so it’s important to be aware of those laws and ensure compliance with them.

Can I choose to host more than one intern?

Yes!

Many companies choose to host multiple interns at once, especially if they have a large number of projects or tasks that require additional support. This allows the company to benefit from the energy and skills of multiple interns, while also providing more opportunities for the interns to learn and grow.

If you decide to host multiple interns, it is important to have a clear plan in place for how they will be supervised, mentored and trained. This may involve assigning specific tasks or projects to each intern or dividing the interns into teams with a designated team leader. It’s also important to make sure you have the resources and infrastructure to accommodate multiple interns, such as enough office space, equipment, and software.
